summary: | The lecture deals with advanced mathematical methods for continuum modeling of microstructure, properties, and processing of materials. The methods are illustrated by selected examples in materials research. The following topics are discussed: - calculation of macroscopic material properties of complex mesoscopic phase morphologies (e.g. porous structures)
- modeling of diffusion-convection-processes during microstructure development: growth processes driven by external fields and capillary driven interface movement (e.g. nanowire growth from solution, sintering)
- phase field modeling for simulation of complex phase boundary evolution
- finite-difference- and spectral methods for numerical solution of related partial differential equations
- variational formulation and solution by the finite element method
The course is accompanied by a practical where the numerical solution of the discussed material problems is demonstrated. Particular emphasis is on the application of finite element software. |
