Science without borders: Materials researchers from Dresden and Shanghai to establish leading global network

On September 27th, 2019, materials scientists from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and TU Dresden are signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement is being signed during a delegation trip to Shanghai by the Rector of TU Dresden, Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen. The researchers of the central academic unit "Dresden Center for Computational Materials Science" (DCMS) of TU Dresden and the "Materials Genome Initiative Center" (MaGIC) of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University aim to establish an internationally leading research cluster in materials science.

Both centers are interdisciplinary research platforms whose goal it is to significantly accelerate the process of discovering, designing and implementing new materials. They are utilising a synergetic approach that combines theory, simulations, experiments and data-based approaches. "Dresden is a leading center for materials research in Europe and worldwide. Strengthening the research network through international cooperation is at the heart of our future strategy," says Prof. Gianaurelio Cuniberti, initiator and managing director of DCMS. "The competencies of our two centers in Dresden and Shanghai complement each other perfectly. The intensified cooperation will generate new and important insights, which will benefit both sides".

An existing cornerstone of the partnership between the two centers are the international summer schools on modern materials, which have been held in Dresden and Shanghai for several years. Starting next year, a joint summer school series will be offered within the framework of the agreement. Further elements of the partnership are already being planned. "The next significant step in the cooperation between our two centers is establishing a joint graduate school. Young scientists in Dresden and Shanghai will conduct research on closely related topics for their doctoral theses. By spending several months carrying out research at each other's locations, they will be able to benefit from the expertise available there and will gain important international experience and intercultural skills," concludes Prof. Cuniberti.
