Low-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures grown on patterned substrates

Recent progress in the studies of ordered semiconductor quantum wires (QWRs) and quantum dots (QDs) grown by organometallic chemical vapor deposition on patterned, nonplanar substrates is reviewed. With this approach, it is possible to achieve, e.g., (In)GaAs/AlGaAs QDs with perfect site control, record uniformity (low temperature inhomogeneous luminescence linewidths as low as 4 meV), and reproducible excitonic structure. Single- and correlated-photon emission is observed from these dots and yields insight into the exciton formation and recombination dynamics in these structures. Moreover, preferential carrier capture into such QDs via connected QWRs is observed in pyramidal QD light emitting diodes. Recent observation of Luttinger liquid behavior in the quantized resistance of V-groove QWRs will also be presented. Applications of these structures in lasers and other photonic devices will be discussed.
