Noncompact lattice gauge theories

On the quest of deriving confinement and other fundamental properties of the strong interaction from Yang-Mills theory, compact lattice gauge theory ("Wilson theory") has been intensely studied for 30 years. Yet, the limit from the lattice to the physical continuum has not be fully understood. Non-compact lattice gauge theories come in as a natural intermediate step to study the details of this continuum limit.
