Photoswitchable self-assembled monolayers on functionalized silicon surfaces

Photoswitchable surfaces hold great promise for future applications in biosensor technology. Photoswitching of azobenzenes and fulgimides immobilized on functionalized Si(111) surfaces are the topics of our recent work within the collaborative research center 658. Milestones of this research will be presented: i) pros and cons of ester and acid-terminated monolayer preparations and characterization by (ATR)-FT-IR spectroscopy, AFM and XPS; ii) strategies and methods for immobilizing photoswitches in self-assembled monolayers on silicon surfaces; iii) photoswitching at the silicon surface: prospects and limitations.

Brief Bio:

Karola R\FCck-Braun studied chemistry at the Johannes Gutenberg-University of Mainz. In 1992 she obtained her PhD with Prof. Dr. Horst Kunz. After postdoctoral studies in the group of Prof. Dr. S. V. Ley in Cambridge (UK) in 1993, she started with her independent research at the University of Mainz and she finished her Habilitation in 1998. In 2000 she accepted a professorship (C3) for Organic Chemistry at the Technische Universit\E4t Berlin (Germany).
