Franz Plate studied Materials Science at TU Dresden and did his Diploma Thesis in the group of single molecular machines, working with atomic and molecular manipulation and characterization techniques by Low Temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (LT-STM) in ultra-high vacuum. He is now pursuing a PhD in the group on the characterization of molecular and atomic structures in regards to their quantum mechanical properties for applications in electronics and mechanics at the nanoscale.
