Dr. Shirong Huang has been leading the Digital Olfaction Sensors group at the Chair of Materials Science and Nanotechnology, TU Dresden, since 2024. He obtained his doctoral degree in 2022 under the supervision of Prof. Gianaurelio Cuniberti at TU Dresden, where he subsequently continued as a postdoctoral researcher. Prior to his doctoral studies, Dr. Huang focused on the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials and their application in thermal management for high-power electronic packaging. This work, conducted under the supervision of Prof. Johan Liu at Shanghai University, China, culminated in his master’s degree in 2014.

Dr. Huang’s current research centers on the synthesis of low-dimensional nanomaterials and their application in the field of smart gas sensors and electronic olfaction systems. His interests also extend to AI-enabled e-olfaction technologies and their deployment in emerging fields such as disease diagnostics, environmental monitoring, smart farming, and industrial process control.

Dr. Huang is IEEE Senior Member since 2025. He serves as a Youth Board Member for Applied Research and Brain-X, member of the IEEE Sensors Council Young Professionals (YP) Committee, and the Young Professional (YP) Chair for the 2025 IEEE Biosensors Conference. He is also a Technical Program Committee member for both the ISOEN 2024 and Digital Olfaction Society (DOS) 2024 conferences, and acts as Guest Editor for Small, Analysis & Sensing, and Advanced Sensor Research. Dr. Huang is an active reviewer for a lot of peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Communications, Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical, Biosensors and Bioelectronics, ACS Sensors, Sensors and Actuators A: Physical, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Carbon, Small, IEEE Sensors Letters, IEEE Sensors Journal, Sensors, Advanced Intelligent Systems, Advanced Engineering Materials, Journal of Hazardous Materials, and Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture. To date, he has published over 50 scientific papers in leading journals and conference proceedings, such as Applied Physics Reviews, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Nano Research, Small, Advanced Intelligent Systems, Carbon, and IEEE Sensors Journal, as well as one book chapter.
