Prof. Das is visiting us from August 17 to September 13, 2018 with an award of the INSA-DFG Bilateral Exchange programme

laudatio:

Prof. Nikhil Ranjan Das received his Ph.D. degree in Radio Physics and Electronics (eq. Electronics & Communication) of the University of Calcutta, India in 1994. He joined the University of Calcutta as a full-time Lecturer in 1994, where he is currently a Professor. He served with the administrative responsibility as Head of the Department (2014-2016) and Dean of Engineering & Technology (2013-2016) and Director of the Centre for Research in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (2015-2017), University of Calcutta. Prof. Das carried out his Ph.D. research on the studies of physical properties of submicron structures of semiconductors, such as modified Einstein relation, magnetic susceptibility in quantum wires, quantized photoelectric emission from quantum rings, etc. Later, he worked in the area of modelling and design of photodetectors and photoreceivers with special focus on optical communication as a Post-Doctoral Fellow/ Research Associate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, McMaster University, Canada during Sept.1999-Aug.2002. He was visiting professor in McMaster University (Canada), University of Sheffield (UK), and Pohang University of Science & Technology (POSTECH, Korea). He was in the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) thematic partnership program with the University of Sheffield (UK) towards the optical sources for subcellular imaging using optical coherence tomography (2012-2015) and in the Erasmus Mundus ‘LEADERS’ program representing University of Calcutta in the consortium of 20 universities of Asia and Europe (2014-2018). His present research interest is broadly in the area of semiconductor nanoelectronics and photonics, which includes the study of physical properties of nanostructures, and modelling and design of nanostructure devices.
