Dr. Solmar Varela is visiting us from March 1st to September 30th, 2022 in the framework of the Dresden Fellowship Programm from the German Research Foundation.

laudatio:

Dr. Solmar Varela received her Ph.D. thesis in 2016 at the Universidad Central de Venezuela. She was a visiting researcher at the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas (IVIC, Venezuela), during which she developed her doctoral thesis entitled "Electronic transport and polarization through chiral films" under the supervision of Dr. Ernesto Medina Dagger. She was Professor of Physics at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, and in 2017 she joined as Lecturer at Yachay Tech University in Ecuador, where she was responsible for teaching courses such as Material Science and Statistical Thermodynamics at the School of Chemical Sciences and Engineering and School of Physics Sciences and Nanotechnology. She has participated in several research projects, with Prof. Dr. Ernesto Medina and Prof. Dr. Vladimiro Mujica as main collaborators.
Her research is centered on analytical modeling of the behavior of complex physical and chemical systems, in particular chiral molecular systems, to study the electron and spin transport associated with the Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity effect (CISS effect).

During her stay as Dresden Junior Fellow, Dr. Varela will be working on Spintronic effects in helical molecules, an interdisciplinary topic which gained a huge momentum over the past 10 years due the discovery of high spin-filtering effects in a variety of organic and biological systems. Considering teaching activities, Dr. Varela is planning to offer a lecture series covering applications of the CISS effect. In parallel, she will set the basis of a series of pedagogical videos on CISS physics and applications, that will considerably help efforts in community building and scientific outreach.
