How bacterial strains living together: Studies in Millifluidic droplet Reactors

Xinne Zhao

Chair of Materials Science and Nanotechnology, TU Dresden, Germany

Study bacterial coexistence has a great meaning for human health. To find out the relationship between coexistent bacteria, two Escherichia coli strains E.coli BFP and E.coli YFP were encapsulated into droplets and their growth was quantified by monitor fluorescent signals. By tuning the initial ratio between the two strains, their doubling time and final ratios were analyzed. The plate reader, cytometry, and microscope and modeling method were used to compare and confirm the results from the droplet reactor. A trade-off between growth rate and relatively biomass yield which is influenced by competition was proved.
