Quantum computer - dream and realization

Quantum mechanical operations could process certain computational operations much more efficiently than classical processes. Building a quantum computer requires the implementation of quantum bits (qubits), quantum registers and quantum gates as well as the development of quantum algorithms. I will present current investigations on ion storage and laser cooling techniques and discuss experimental realizations of quantum registers and quantum gate operations. Using two and three trapped Ca+ ions in a linear Paul trap as qubits, we have generated two-particle entangled pre-programmed quantum states (Bell states) and three-particle states (GHZ and W states). These states were subsequently analysed tomographically and characterized by various entanglement measures. With Bell states as a source, entangled states were applied to teleportation and to improving precision measurements.
