Science has always made extensive use of suitable available techniques to serve scientific communication. Thus the deficiencies of the professional communication by paper journal publishing are stepwise replaced by new services: online open access journals and documents, multimedia interactive and fully documented material including codes of numerical programming, online refereeing of teaching material, etc.
A survey of the international spreadout of Open Access, of the new techniques and services is given as well as experiences of and recommendations for an individual author, user, department, and University.
