Introduction to topological insulators
Binghai Yan
Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, Dresden

Oct. 26, 2012, 1:30 p.m.

We usually classify materials into metals and insulators. Recently a new state of matter was reported as the topological insulator. They are an insulator inside the bulk and a metal on the surface, different from a normal insulator or metal. They have already been observed in many materials with attracting potential of application. This talk will introduce the simple models and physical properties of topological insulators, using HgTe and Bi2Se3 as prime examples. In addition, I will explain some general principles to find a topological insulator in a viewpoint of materials.
