Interdisciplinarity is crucial for tackling the current century challenges. Nanotechnology can contribute to several fields filling the gap between different disciplines. Nanomaterials represent an essential tool for i) solving several human and environmental health-related issues, ii) for tackling sustainable energy sources-related challenges and iii) for boosting technology in various areas, including the aerospace one. Herein, we will focus on our recent advancements on novel lightweight radiation-shielding composites for small satellites. We will also provide an overview of some of our most recent results on nanomaterials for human and environmental-health, e.g. bio-imaging[1], sensors[2] and photocatalysis for water-cleaning[3,4]. Finally, we will discuss our recent work on core/shell magnetic nanoparticles to obtain sustainable permanent magnets that are rare earth elements-free.
